What is Disc Golf?
Disc golf is a sport enjoyed around the world by people of all ages, and can be played year round. It is similar to ball golf. The goal is to throw a small disc (similar to a Frisbee®) from a tee area into a metal basket with the fewest number of throws.
There are different types of discs to choose from. Drivers are used when teeing off. Mid-range discs are used in the fairway, between the tee and basket. Near the basket, putters are used. There is a large variety of discs to choose from, each designed for a specific purpose.
Currently, there are around 3,000 courses worldwide. In addition to Pine Ridge Park, there are two courses near Indiana. Getty Heights Park has a 9-hole recreation course. At the IUP Co-op Park, there is the 18-hole championship College Lodge course.
The Professional Disc Golf Association maintains a course directory and listing of official rules for the sport of disc golf. DGCourseReview has a course directory with reviews, upcoming tournaments, and other helpful information.
The Pittsburgh Flying Disc Society is a western Pennsylvania organization promoting flying disc sports and games in western Pennsylvania. They also hold local tournaments. To get the latest news on disc golf, and to view instructional videos, visit Ace Runners.
