Ghost Town Trail Updates - (02-05-2008)

Dilltown Bridge Project To Begin in March 2008

A contract has been awarded to Shawrose, Inc. of Coraopolis, PA to construct two pedestrian bridges at the Ghost Town Trail. The two bridges are located just west of Dilltown, PA and when completed will provide the final missing link in the Ghost Town Trail system. Construction of the bridges is expected to begin in March 2008 with an anticipated September 2008 completion.

The two structures will be pre-fabricated bridges similar to the existing Red Mill Bridge on the Rexis Branch of the Ghost Town Trail. The project also involves repairing the bridge piers and abutments. Total project construction cost is $822,222. Gibson-Thomas Engineering of Latrobe, PA is the project engineer. The Indiana County Parks & Trails maintenance staff will construct the 1-mile connection between the bridges and the Dilltown Access Area.

The Armerford Bridge is 225 feet in length and the Scott Glen Bridge is 125 feet in length. Once completed the bridges will provide continuous trail link from Black Lick to Ebensburg, PA a distance of 33 miles.

New Trail Mini-Shelter Planned

Another trail mini-shelter will be added to the Ghost Town Trail this spring. Thanks to donations received from both the Indiana Road Runners Club and Jed Fetterman, Penns Manor High School student a new mini-shelter will be constructed near Auld’s Run on the Ghost Town Trail extension. As a student service project Jed Fetterman bicycled the entire Hoodlebug and Ghost Town Trail and solicited donations in support of the trail. The Road Runners Club provides on-going financial support of the trail from their annual ‘Race for the Trail’ held in August of each year. The community minded efforts of both sponsors is greatly appreciated.

Hoodlebug Trail Updates - (02-05-2008)

Hoodlebug Trail Connector

Planning for the feasibility of establishing the Hoodlebug Trail bypass to connect the Hoodlebug Trail and the Ghost Town Trail near Saylor Park in Blacklick, PA is continuing. The planned trail route was lost last year due to the collapse of the trail ledge along Blacklick Creek. An alternate route further away from the creek is being considered. A property survey of the alternate trail route is being completed. Use of the alternate route will require approval to use the abandoned Josephine spur of the CSX Railroad.
